Rosacea Prescriptions at a Glance

Rosacea is a chronic condition, and the management is never single-dimensional.  When it comes to prescription medications, there are many options. It is essential to consider your symptoms and medical background to develop a personalised plan. We recommend you consult a GP experienced in rosacea management or a dermatologist. The treatment of rosacea revolves around treating inflammation, flushing, and redness; addressing sebum production, demodex overgrowth, and managing skin sensitivity.

Below is an overview of rosacea prescription management options.

Anti-inflammation

Reducing inflammation is the key to treating the inflammatory phase of rosacea.  Anti-inflammatory cream, anti-inflammatory antibiotics and oral vitamin A usually achieve this.

Oral vitamin A is used for severe or persistent symptoms that do not respond to first line anti-inflammatory treatment. It is a medication prescribed by a dermatologist only.

Demodex overgrowth

Demodex mites naturally inhabit our skin. While they are typically harmless, an overgrowth or abnormal immune response to these mites has been associated with rosacea. Demodex overgrowth can be managed with topical creams and oral medications.

Anti-flushing

Certain medications can reduce the reactivity of blood vessels and relieve the symptoms. Neuromuscular modulators injected intradermally also help with flushing.

Anti-redness

The cause of redness will need to be assessed first.  Sometimes redness is due to inflammation, hence anti-inflammatory treatment.  Sometimes, redness is due to dilated blood vessels. Therefore, we use vasoconstrictive creams to narrow the vessels and reduce redness.

Anti sebum production

Those with enlarged noses due to excessive sebum production will benefit from oral vitamin A, a treatment to normalise sebum production.  Oral vitamin A is only prescribed by a dermatologist.

Skin sensitivity, burning, pain

The approach to sensitivity skin includes restoring skin barrier function, treating inflammation, and, for the persistent pain/sensitivity symptoms, oral medication that specifically addresses the nerve-ending sensitivity. Superficial injection of neuromodulators (prescription medication) can be helpful too.
